The magical wand of a good educator can bring hope and transform young lives. Carean Oh shares her remarkable experience from the classroom.
By Carean Oh : I remember starting out as a teacher in 2003. Julia (surname undisclosed) was a dyslexic child. Whenever she could spell a word or read a sentence perfectly, I would give her a sticker in the shape of a star. Julia would look forward to collecting them. What’s the reward, teacher? She would ask. At the end of the semester, she flashed her results slip before me and grinned. Where’s my reward, teacher? I gave her a pencil case. In it were glow stars. And I said, “These are not real, but in a way, the stars you have been collecting have come alive. And you made it happen.” Today, Julia still calls me ‘Teacher Carean’. She is touching lives in her own ways in the company she works for, as a HR executive, developing people. Teaching changes lives, only if you believe in them, and the magic of stars that you can produce.
